A Distinguished Background

The General Officer in his career spanning over 40 years has held various coveted Command, Staff and Instructional appointments, with vast operational experience of handling insurgency / terrorism in the North East and J & K, besides nuances of Line of Control and Line of Actual Control along Northern borders.

Important Command / Staff assignments include Command of Mountain Division in the Eastern Theatre, prestigious Srinagar based 15 Corps in Kashmir and Commander-in-Chief of the unique Tri- Service Andaman & Nicobar Command, besides two tenures as Deputy and Additional Director General in Military Operations Directorate. After a chequered career of four decades, he superannuated as Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC) in May 2013.


Experience in Sphere of Disaster / Crisis Management

Besides involvement in rendering support during rescue and relief in various natural calamities and disasters, while posted in Military Operations Directorate and in senior appointments, he was intimately involved in planning and overseeing execution of rescue, evacuation and relief operations during Satluj Flash Floods (2005), Earthquake in J&K (2005), Brahmputra Floods (2007) and Kosi Floods (2008). During these calamities, the General Officer had interfaced with NDMA and MHA (DM Division) and concerned agencies and State Governments in coordinating deployment of resources of the Army. He was also involved in coordinating provision of relief material and deployment of Army and Naval resources for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) for Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

As Additional Director General Military Operations, he was responsible to coordinate response of Services during 26/11 Mumbai Attack and its aftermath. He also participated and presented a paper on ‘HADR in Natural and Human-induced Disaster’ at the International Disaster Management Seminar at Tokyo in 2009.


As Commander-in-Chief Andaman and Nicobar Command, he contributed towards refinement of Disaster Management Plan, conduct of Tsunami mock drill in concert with all stake holders and organizing an International Seminar on HADR, attended by Navies of 12 littorals of the South East Asia Region.


Significant Achievements / Contributions 

As Divisional Commander in Upper Assam / Arunachal Pradesh, for initiative of conflict resolution, leading to ULFA coming to the negotiating table, maintaining excellent civil-military relations especially handling severe floods in Brahmputra, he was conferred with Distinguished Service Award of Ati Vishisht Seva Medal.

As Corps Commander at Srinagar, provided interface and support to State Government in handling insurgency and deteriorating law and order situation, besides planning meaningful Civic Action programmes. For successfully handling various sensitive strategic, operational and administrative issues as Corps Commander and Commander-in-Chief of the unique Tri-Service Command, awarded coveted decoration of Param Vishist Seva Medal.

The General Officer has extensively travelled on overseas commitments. He has vast experience in handling crisis situation and participating in strategic level discussions at international fora. Participated in various Seminars and National Level meetings with representatives of Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

He was deputed as Military Observer and Operations Staff Officer in UNIIMOG (United Nations Iran Iraq Military Observers Group) in Iran. As member of important diplomatic delegations, he visited China and Myanmar twice. He was member of Inter Ministerial Group to review Security of Indian Embassy and all Consulates in Afghanistan in 2005-06. He attended the UN Senior Mission Leaders Course at Vienna, Austria in 2008 and Pacific Armies Management Seminar at Tokyo, Japan in 2009. He headed tri-service delegation to Phuket (2012) and Gulf Defence Conference at Abu Dhabi in 2013.

The General Officer has a deep interest in Strategic Issues of military importance and has been associated with numerous studies / seminars.
