    Stay available - keep your mobile phones charged for emergency communication via SMS
    Be alert - listen to radio, watch TV, read newspapers for weather updates
    Don’t ignore animals - keep cattle/animals untied to ensure their safety
    Survival is key - prepare an emergency kit with essential items for safety and survival
    Save your valuables - keep your documents and valuables in water-proof bags
    Before flood - remain safe inside
    Before flood - try to be at home if high tide and heavy rains occur simultaneously
    Before flood - listen to radio, watch TV, read newspapers for weather updates
    Response - ensure that you are familiar with local emergency procedures, especially, assembly points and routes to those points
    Preparation - it’s advisable to get your home evaluated by a professional  structural engineer
    During floods - ensure cleanliness - use disinfectants to keep your surroundings clean

    During flood - evacuate low-lying areas and move to safer places
    During flood - don’t use electric equipment while standing on wet floor
    During flood - don’t use any damaged electrical goods
    During flood - don’t eat food that has come into contact with flood water
    During flood - don’t walk/swim through flowing water
    During flood - ensure safety by turning off power and gas connection; be alert for gas leaks
    During flood - don’t drive through flooded areas
    During flood - watch your step - stay away from sewerage lines, gutters, drains, culverts etc
    During flood - don’t enter flood waters, in case you need to, wear suitable footwear
    During flood - eat freshly cooked food or dry food
    •During flood - ensure cleanliness - use disinfectants to keep your surroundings clean
    During flood - if you need to evacuate - put sandbags in the toilet bowl and cover all drain holes to prevent sewage backflow
    During flood - if you need to evacuate - turn off power and gas connection
    During flood - if you need to evacuate - move to a higher ground/ safe shelter
    During flood - stay away from electric poles and fallen power lines to avoid electrocution
    During flood - drink boiled / chlorinated water
    During flood - watch out for broken electric poles and wires, sharp objects and debris
    After flood - do not enter deep, unknown waters, use a stick to check water depth
    If you need to evacuate - put sandbags in the toilet bowl and cover all drain holes to prevent sewage backflow
    After flood - use mosquito nets to prevent malaria
    After flood - don’t use the toilet or tap water if the water lines / sewerage pipes are damaged
    After flood - do not allow children to play in or near flood water
    Response - monitor media for any information on the flood
    If moving on foot - do not walk through moving water unless it is necessary - if you have to, use a stick
    If moving on foot - avoid power lines that have come down because of the danger of electrocution
    Recovery and clean up - some roads may still present a danger from flood water and debris, take an alternate route
    Recovery and clean up - if you need to move in areas subjected to flooding, stay on firm ground as water may be charged with electricity
    Recovery and clean up -  avoid walking through flood debris, there may be hidden dangers
    If you are inside - do not smoke or use a naked flame in or near your home unless you are certain that there is no gas leak or flammable materials present
    If you are inside - check the integrity of all wiring, sockets and light switches
    Response - before cleaning up, photograph any damage for insurance purposes
    Response - monitor media information channels for any information on flood
    Response - ensure that you are familiar with local emergency procedures, especially assembly points
    Response - If flash flooding is likely to occur, evacuate to higher ground
    Response - be aware of all likely channels that are prone to flash flooding such as streams, rivers, drainage ditches
    If evacuation is necessary - turn off gas and electricity at the mains
    If evacuation is necessary - disconnect electrical appliances
    If evacuation is necessary - do not drive into a flooded area
    When evacuation is necessary - just a few centimeters of water will reach the bottom of most cars and compromise control and engine functioning
    Preparation - fit water resistant material as flooring i.e. tiles rather than wood, especially lower floor levels
    If evacuation is necessary - if rising water envelops your vehicle, abandon it and seek higher ground
